TOKYO -- China has raised the prospect of an attack on the United States as part of Beijing's efforts to capture neighboring Taiwan.

The Haowangjiao Weekly, sponsored by the People's Liberation Army, said China could launch a "neutron bomb attack on Taiwan and a nuclear showdown with the United States. The United States will not sacrifice 200 million Americans for 20 million Taiwanese."
The special edition of the magazine asserted that "China has developed new, multiple-warhead long-range missiles." It said China could strike "U.S. satellites and military bases in the Pacific."
The article said China could threaten the United States with a nuclear attack American troops and presence would not withdraw from the straits of Taiwan.
The latest threat comes as China placed its military on high alert amid the election of a pro-independence Taiwanese president. Beijing has pressed Taiwan to unify with the mainland.
