Some of the secrets that China got
The Cox report lists some of the technology that China obtained through its more than 20 years of spying in the U.S., but the list is most longer than the public report would suggest. Among the losses:
Nuclear bomb technology for the seven most sophisticated U.S. nuclear weapons: The W56, W57 and W72, which were taken out of production and service in 70's; The W87, which is the MX "Peace Keeper" payload. Up to 10 can be carried and deployed (MIRVed) from a single missile; The W88, the weapon for the submarine-launchable Trident; up to eight can be launched at a time; The W78, used to arm the Minuteman III; three can be MIRVed at once; W-70 neutron bomb technology, which leaves buildings intact but kills with enhanced radiation; Electromagnetic pulse technology for killing opposing electronics or space-based weapons; Other space-based weapons technology to attack satellites and missiles; Satellite technology and research for detecting submarines; Guidance technology used in missiles; Guidance technology used in warplanes, including in the F-14, F- 15, F-16 and F-117; Stealth technology; Machine tools and jet engine technologies that can be used for warplanes and silk worm cruise missiles.
In addition:
High-performance (super)computers have been sold to China, in some cases to facilities that conduct military research. China is using the computers - in violation of export agreements - in the development of nuclear weapons, missiles, satellites, spacecraft, submarines, aircraft, military systems, command and control systems, communications, and microwave and laser sensors. The Department of Justice is investigating Silicon Graphics and another unnamed company for improper exports of supercomputers.
Hughes Electronics and Loral Space illegally transferred technology that helped China improve its military rockets and operations, including the design and reliability of its ballistic missiles and nose cones. The Dept. of Justice is investigating both companies, as well as Motorola.
China has obtained "exploding bolts" from the U.S., which burst and help multistage rockets jettison stages. China also has obtained U.S. "kick motor" technology, which positions satellites in their proper orbits and can be used to deploy multiple warheads from a single missile. These are called Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicles (MIRVs). The technology allows multiple warheads to be mounted on one missile and fired at several cities in one launch.
China knows how to miniaturize warheads and deploy several at a time from a single missile. It is technically "on par" with the United States, but China has not built or tested these weapons yet. That begins this fall.
